Choosing RTP pipe takes more than matching a diameter and pressure class. You also need to confirm the fluid, reinforcement, fittings and installation conditions. This guide explains how the pipe works and what to check before you compare suppliers or request a quotation.
What Is RTP Pipe?
RTP stands for reinforced thermoplastic pipe. It combines a thermoplastic liner with structural reinforcement and an outer protective cover. Spoolable versions can be supplied in continuous lengths on reels or in coils.
The reinforcement helps the pipe carry loads beyond those supported by the liner alone. However, “RTP” describes a product family, not one fixed material or performance rating. Different designs use different reinforcement materials and layer arrangements. Some include metallic reinforcement, so the name does not automatically mean every component is non-metallic.
When you source RTP pipe from CNPS, ask for the proposed construction and model-specific datasheet. Use these to identify what is actually being offered before comparing numerical ratings.
Understand the Layers Before Comparing Products
The Liner Defines the Fluid Contact Surface
The liner contains the conveyed fluid. Your material review therefore starts with the liner material and its suitability for the actual service. HDPE is used in some RTP systems, but you should confirm the material rather than assume it from the product name.
The Reinforcement Defines Part of the Structural Design
The reinforcement carries structural loads. Fibre-reinforced and steel-wire-reinforced constructions both exist in the wider market. Bonded and unbonded layer arrangements also differ. Ask suppliers to describe their design; do not treat visually similar pipes as equivalent.
The Cover Protects the Pipe from External Exposure
The outer cover protects the underlying structure. Confirm its intended exposure conditions and the supplier’s handling requirements. A black or white jacket does not by itself establish UV performance, abrasion limits or permission for permanent surface installation.
SoluForce’s product explanation illustrates how liner, reinforcement, cover and optional barrier layers can vary. These are examples of construction choices, not a specification shared by every RTP product.
Where Is RTP Pipe Used?
RTP is considered for oilfield fluid-transfer duties such as gathering, water injection, produced-water transport and disposal. The relevant question is whether a particular pipe-and-fitting system is suitable for your application.
Use the following questions to narrow the enquiry:
| Application | Information to establish | Procurement consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Produced-water transfer | Water composition, treatment chemicals, solids and operating conditions | Request a compatibility review for the proposed system |
| Injection service | Required pressure, temperature and operating cycles | Have the supplier assess the actual duty, including changes in operation |
| Oil or multiphase gathering | Fluid composition and anticipated operating conditions | Confirm the qualified service envelope rather than relying on a water-service rating |
| Gas service | Gas composition and requirements for permeation management | Request the applicable product evidence and operating restrictions |
| Surface or buried routes | Exposure, crossings, access and external loads | Include route requirements in the supplier’s technical review |
These are enquiry prompts, not design acceptance criteria. Service approval should identify the offered pipe, fittings and conditions.
Check RTP Pipe Pressure, Temperature and Fluid Compatibility Together
Request a Service Rating, Not Just a Maximum Number
A maximum pressure in a catalogue may apply to a particular temperature, size or construction. Ask suppliers to state the operating envelope for the exact product being quoted and distinguish service ratings from test pressures.
For example, NOV’s Fiberspar product information separates water and hydrocarbon service conditions and describes different liner options. You should apply the same discipline to your enquiry: a rating demonstrated for one service is not automatically evidence for another. Do not transfer NOV’s product values to a CNPS order.
If a quotation lists separate maximum pressure and maximum temperature figures, ask whether they can apply simultaneously. Record any operating restrictions with the offer so your technical team can review them before approval.
Describe the Fluid and Operating Changes
Send the available fluid analysis and explain anticipated changes in temperature, pressure and composition. Include treatment chemicals, solids or gas components relevant to the service. Identify normal operation and any known cleaning, start-up or shutdown conditions.
Ask the supplier to identify assumptions and information still needed. A general claim such as “corrosion resistant” should lead to a compatibility discussion, not replace it.
Specify the Pipe and Fittings as One System
Your pipe quotation should define how the line connects to the rest of the project. Request the proposed end fittings, intermediate joints, transitions and associated drawings. Confirm the connection requirements at valves, equipment and existing pipework.
Do not assume that a fitting suitable for ordinary polyethylene pipe is suitable for the reinforced product. Ask for the supplier’s approved connection method and the evidence covering the proposed pipe-and-fitting combination.
Clarify who provides joining equipment, consumables, installer training and technical support. Where a supplier offers site assistance, confirm whether it covers supervision, training or installation work. These are different supply scopes.
The practical test is simple: can you identify the complete system being offered, the interfaces it must match and the party responsible for each connection?
What Does API 15S Mean for an RTP Purchase?
API Specification 15S addresses spoolable reinforced plastic line pipe. API’s program documents list it separately from API 15HR, API 15LR and API 17J. The numbers should not be used interchangeably in an enquiry.
Ask the supplier to state the applicable specification, edition and project requirements. Also distinguish a claim of design or manufacture to a standard from a claim of current certification or licensing. Request evidence that matches the manufacturer, product and quoted supply.
API’s historical 15S scope summary includes pipe, end fittings and couplings and notes that additional offshore requirements fall outside that document’s scope. It is a 2016 summary, not a substitute for reviewing the edition required by your project.
If the project is offshore or has additional operator requirements, specify those conditions explicitly. A reference to onshore spoolable pipe alone does not settle that review.
Plan Reel Delivery and Installation Access Early
Continuous lengths can reduce the number of intermediate joints along a route. The useful delivery length still depends on the product, reel and project logistics. Confirm how much pipe each reel contains and how the supply plan relates to the route.
Before comparing delivery offers, request:
- Reel dimensions, shipping weight and supplied length per reel.
- Transport and unloading requirements for the proposed package.
- Product-specific storage, handling and unspooling instructions.
- Applicable installation and operating bend limits.
- Joining locations, equipment needs and access requirements.
- Inspection, testing and handover responsibilities.
A pipe being spoolable does not mean it can be bent without limits or installed by any method. Send route drawings and known constraints for review rather than selecting a bend radius from a generic article.
As an operator-specific example, ADNOC’s published RTP specification addresses external loads, crossings and installation conditions. Its requirements are not universal instructions, but they show why route information belongs in procurement discussions.
Compare RTP Pipe Quotes on an Agreed Basis
Start with technical acceptance, then compare commercial scope. A lower price per metre is not a complete comparison if one offer excludes fittings, reel charges or required testing.
| Quote item | What to record before comparison |
|---|---|
| Product and construction | Model, liner, reinforcement and datasheet revision |
| Approved service envelope | Pressure, temperature, fluid and stated restrictions |
| Dimensions and quantity | Relevant ID/OD, length unit, total length and reel schedule |
| Connections | Fittings, transitions, accessories and exclusions |
| Quality documents | Qualification evidence, inspection scope and traceability records |
| Site requirements | Joining equipment, training and support included |
| Delivery | Reel arrangements, delivery point, transport scope and schedule |
Where suppliers offer alternatives, list the differences for technical review. Do not hide an unapproved change inside a price comparison.
For a comparison with steel or another material, define the same duty and project boundaries first. Include relevant installation, protection, inspection and operating costs. Avoid using a generic percentage saving as your purchasing case.
Prepare Your RTP Pipe RFQ
To request a useful proposal, send the following information together:
- Application and available fluid analysis.
- Design and operating pressure and temperature requirements.
- Required dimensions, total length and route drawings.
- Surface, buried or crossing conditions and known access constraints.
- End connections and existing equipment interfaces.
- Project standards, inspection and document requirements.
- Delivery destination, required dates and requested site support.
Mark unknown items as open questions. Ask suppliers to return a proposed product, assumptions, deviations and a clearly defined supply scope. Resolve the important differences before converting the quotation into an order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RTP Pipe the Same as HDPE Pipe?
An RTP product includes structural reinforcement as well as a thermoplastic liner. A plain HDPE pipe description does not identify that reinforced construction. When comparing offers, check the actual wall construction and qualified service conditions rather than the polymer name alone.
Is Every RTP Pipe Fully Non-Metallic?
No. Some products use fibre reinforcement, while others include metallic reinforcement or barrier layers. End fittings can also be metallic. If your project requires a fully non-metallic construction or specific electrical properties, state that requirement and request the relevant product evidence.
What Pressure and Temperature Can RTP Pipe Handle?
There is no single rating for the whole product family. Request the pressure-temperature envelope for the offered model and service. Confirm whether published maxima apply together and whether the fittings carry the corresponding rating.
Can RTP Pipe Be Used for Gas or Sour Service?
Some qualified systems are offered for these duties, but the material name alone is not sufficient approval. Provide the gas composition and operating conditions, then obtain a review covering compatibility, permeation and any applicable restrictions.
Can You Use Standard HDPE Fittings with RTP Pipe?
Do not assume compatibility. The supplier should identify the connection method and fittings approved for the specific reinforced construction. Ask who supplies the tooling and whether installer training or inspection is required.
Does RTP Pipe Need Field Welding?
The joining method depends on the system and its interfaces. Ask whether the proposed scope uses mechanical, fusion or other approved connections, what equipment is needed and what work remains at transitions. “No welding” should not be treated as a universal RTP claim.
How Long Is an RTP Pipe Reel?
Reel length is product- and shipment-specific. Ask for the proposed reel schedule, dimensions and weight, and check them against transport access and the installation plan. Do not use another supplier’s longest available reel as an expected delivery quantity.
Does API 15S Mean the Supplier Is API Certified?
A reference to the specification is not enough to establish that claim. Ask for the exact certification or licensing statement and verify its scope against the proposed manufacturer and product. The project specification still needs to define acceptance requirements.
Discuss Your RTP Pipe Requirements
Define the service conditions, route, connections and required documents before comparing RTP pipe offers. Send your available specifications and open questions to CNPS to discuss product information and the scope of your enquiry.
