GRE Casing Buying Guide: Specs, Suppliers and Delivery

Before you compare GRE casing prices, check whether each quote covers the same specifications, documents and delivery requirements. This guide explains what to confirm with suppliers, how to identify differences between offers and what information to prepare for a clear quotation.

Define Your GRE Casing Requirement Before Requesting Quotes

Confirm the Product and Its Intended Use

GRE stands for glass-reinforced epoxy. GRE casing is a non-metallic composite casing made with glass reinforcement and an epoxy resin system. When you request a quotation, identify the casing application rather than asking for “GRE pipe” alone.

A supplier may offer casing, tubing and surface line pipe under the same broad product family. Your enquiry should name the product you need and its role in the project. Also clarify whether you require a non-metallic casing body or a metallic tubular with a GRE liner. These descriptions refer to different products.

Include a project specification or drawing if you have one. If you are still evaluating options, explain the intended use and ask what information the supplier needs for technical review. You can explore CNPS’s non-metallic product solutions to identify the relevant product family before making an enquiry.

Separate Confirmed Requirements from Open Questions

Tell suppliers which requirements your technical team has approved and which remain open. List the known well conditions, required dimensions and project constraints. Mark missing information clearly.

For example, you may know the required delivery date and total length while the connection remains under review. Ask the supplier to identify its proposed connection and any assumptions in the quotation. This gives you a useful offer without treating an unapproved option as a final specification.

Compare Dimensions, Lengths and Quantity Units

Do not rely on nominal size alone. Request the relevant dimensional drawing and check how the supplier defines its size designation. Compare the casing body and connection dimensions against your approved requirements.

Ask how the quantity is measured. An offer for a number of joints needs a stated joint length before you can compare it with an offer per metre. If your requirement is an installed length, clarify how the proposed supply quantity relates to that requirement.

Use the following table to record questions for each supplier. Your technical team should determine which fields apply to the project.

Ask What the Ratings Cover

A pressure figure needs context. Ask which product configuration it describes, what temperature and service conditions apply, and whether it is an operating rating or a test value.

Do not treat an internal pressure rating as confirmation of every load the casing may encounter. Your technical team should identify the relevant external pressure, axial loading and installation conditions, then obtain the supplier’s assessment for the proposed product.

A published fiberglass casing project report discusses collapse resistance and connection requirements during product selection. The procurement lesson is to request project-specific confirmation rather than assume a catalogue number settles suitability. The report describes a historical water-well application; its values are not a specification for your project.

Confirm Connections and Included Components

Ask for the proposed connection details and a list of included components. Clarify whether couplings, adapters or other required items are included, supplied separately or provided by another party.

If a connection must match existing equipment, send the relevant drawings for review. Ask for written compatibility confirmation. A similar name or size description is not enough to approve substitution.

Request the applicable assembly and handling instructions as well. You need to know what information and support will be available to the installation team before the order is placed.

Check the GRE Casing Supplier and Product Documents

Clarify Manufacturing, Supply and Technical Responsibilities

Ask who manufactures the proposed casing and who is responsible for the quotation, quality documents and technical responses. If the seller coordinates supply from another manufacturer, clarify how product identification and document traceability will be maintained.

Evaluate the proposed arrangement through its evidence and responsibilities. A clear answer should identify the product, the responsible parties and the documents you will receive. General statements about experience do not resolve missing product information.

For project support, ask what is included. Document review, installation guidance and on-site assistance are different services. Confirm the scope, availability and any separate charges you need to consider.

Match Claims to the Exact Product and Order

Request documents that support the claims relevant to your purchase. Depending on the project, these may include a product datasheet, dimensional drawing, stated standard basis, test information and order-specific inspection records.

Ask how each document relates to the proposed model and production supply. A company management-system certificate answers a different question from a product test report. Check the scope of each document rather than treating all certificates as interchangeable evidence.

If a supplier cites API 15HR, verify what it is claiming. API lists the specification as High-pressure Fiberglass Line Pipe. Ask the supplier to explain the applicable requirements and provide the supporting evidence for the proposed casing. A standard number on a webpage does not by itself establish product certification or suitability for your well.

Agree on the documents required before approval, before shipment and with the delivered goods. This makes document preparation part of the order rather than an unresolved request after delivery.

Align Product, Quantity and Included Items

Send each supplier the same enquiry package and request a list of deviations. Separate an offer that meets your stated requirements from an alternative that needs technical approval.

If one supplier proposes a different connection, dimension or product configuration, resolve that difference before using its price in a direct comparison. Keep the original requirement and the alternative clearly labelled.

Use a comparison sheet such as this:

Separate Included Costs and Exclusions

Check the currency, quotation validity, payment conditions and agreed delivery location. Ask whether packing, inspection, transport and any requested support are included or charged separately.

Where a quotation uses a trade term, confirm the named place and the agreed allocation of costs and responsibilities. Do not assume that “shipping included” answers every transport question.

Record items awaiting confirmation. An offer with unresolved scope should remain provisional in your comparison. Once the scope is aligned, you can assess the quoted total alongside technical acceptance and delivery commitments.

Agree on Delivery Requirements Before Placing the Order

Define the Schedule and Approval Milestones

Ask what starts the quoted lead time. It may depend on order confirmation, payment, drawing approval or another agreed event. Put that starting point in writing.

Distinguish readiness for shipment from arrival at your destination. Ask suppliers to identify the expected sequence for technical approval, production, inspection, document release and shipment. Compare that sequence with your project’s required arrival date.

If an item is described as available from stock, request confirmation that the available configuration matches the approved order. For a custom product, ask which approvals or material decisions could affect the schedule.

Confirm Packing, Documents and Receiving Checks

Request packing and handling information for the exact product being supplied. Share relevant unloading, storage or access constraints with the supplier and your site team.

Agree on the shipment identification and document package. Confirm how the receiving team will match the delivered items to the packing list, approved specification and inspection records.

Before shipment, establish how visible damage, quantity differences or missing documents should be recorded and reported. Ask who will respond and what information they need. These arrangements help you resolve delivery issues without leaving the site team to work out the process on arrival.

Prepare a Clear GRE Casing RFQ

A request for quotation should let the supplier distinguish firm requirements from items needing review. Include:

  • Intended casing use and available project drawings.
  • Approved technical requirements and known operating conditions.
  • Required dimensions, length, quantity and measurement units.
  • Connection and accessory requirements.
  • Required documents, inspection and acceptance arrangements.
  • Delivery destination and required arrival date.
  • Requested support and unresolved technical questions.

Ask suppliers to state assumptions, exclusions and deviations in their response. Keep a record of accepted clarifications and incorporate them into the final order documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Order GRE Casing Using Nominal Size Alone?

Nominal size is a starting point. Before ordering, confirm the proposed product’s dimensions, connection, ratings and relevant conditions against your approved requirements. Ask for a drawing and an identified datasheet so both parties refer to the same product.

Can a Catalogue Serve as the Order Acceptance Specification?

Do not assume it does. Agree on the specification and acceptance documents for the order. If catalogue data forms part of that agreement, identify its revision and resolve any general notes, limitations or conflicting information before approval.

How Do You Compare Quotes in Metres and Individual Joints?

Ask for the joint length, number of joints and total supplied length. Confirm what each price includes. Use a consistent quantity basis for comparison, while retaining the full assembly and accessory scope in your cost assessment.

Can You Substitute GRE Tubing for GRE Casing?

Do not approve a substitution based on the shared material name. Describe the intended duty and have your technical team and supplier review the proposed product, connection and applicable requirements before accepting an alternative.

What If Two Suppliers Offer Different Connections?

Treat the offers as different configurations until the connections are reviewed. Request drawings, included-component lists and applicable assembly information. Confirm compatibility with the project’s equipment and requirements before comparing the alternatives as equivalent supply.

Does an API Standard Reference Prove Product Certification?

The reference alone is insufficient. Ask what the supplier claims, which product and manufacturing location the evidence covers, and how the documentation supports that claim. Check any licence or certification information against the relevant issuing body’s records.

When Should the Quoted Delivery Lead Time Start?

Use a starting event agreed with the supplier. State whether approvals, payment or other conditions must be completed first. Also specify whether the quoted period ends at shipment readiness, dispatch or arrival, because those dates serve different planning needs.

What If Some Technical Requirements Are Still Unconfirmed?

Submit the information you have and label the open questions. Ask the supplier to state its assumptions and the information needed for review. Keep any resulting quotation provisional until the relevant technical requirements and supply scope are agreed.
